THREE PHASES OF A CAREER

1990—1998

Ecological architecture

Hands-on work began in 1990, as junior designer, at the office of Bruno Erat — the pioneering figure of Finnish eco-architecture. At around the same time, three architectural awards received — including the European Convention of Constructional Steelwork Student Medal in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1990. Several exhibitions on ecological design and sustainability followed. In 1992, the demo Indicators of the State of the World purchased to the permanent exhibition of Heureka, Finnish Science Center.

In 1998, a master's thesis on sustainable urban planning became the first student work published in the Department of Architecture's own series.

With HRH Princess Anne as an awardee, 1990.

1998—~2015

Climate and environmental journalism

Host and reporter at the weekly television program Ympäristöuutiset (Environmental News), then science reporter at Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Company. In 2004, the documentary The Venus Theory — exploring the possibility of a runaway greenhouse effect — won three international awards, including the Special Prize of the Jury at Image et Science, Paris.

The 2007 nonfiction book Ilmastonmuutos. Nyt. (Climate Change. Now.), published by Otava, was met with wide acclaim and the Lauri Jäntti Honorary Award.

More wide-ranging, thought-provoking, and compelling than any environmental book in a long time — perhaps ever.
— Ympäristöasiantuntija, 1/2008

The 2010 Yle/ARTE co-production La ville en vert (Green City) earned the TunnustusPAANU sustainability award from the Finnish Association of Architects. In 2019, the biennial Tiedon harava prize recognised the full body of climate journalism.

2015—now

Historical research

A deliberate turn from climate and sustainability journalism toward environmental history of architecture. The doctoral thesis Genius or Charlatanry? A Psychobiographical Reinterpretation of the Life and Works of Buckminster Fuller (Aalto University, 2024) received the highest grade and the Aalto University Doctoral Thesis Award 2025.

Current research interests range from the history of ecological architecture to psychological biography.
